Our Sunnyvale Team cleans the streets in a Neighborhood Enhancement Action Team (NEAT) in partnership with various city agencies and Sunnyvale Community Services. We perform regular outreach to make sure the unhoused residents of Sunnyvale have access to services.
The Team focuses on Fair Oaks Park and the surrounding neighborhoods where they:
Report gang activity and tagging
Collect cigarette butts to be Terracycled into plastic pellets and park benches
Perform peer-to-peer outreach at Fair Oaks Park and Sunnyvale Public Library
Fair Oaks Park & Neighborhood Cleanup
In partnership with Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS) we launched our Sunnyvale Team in 2012. Six days a week (Monday - Saturday) we provide neighborhood and park cleanup in and around Fair Oaks Park. We work closely with SCS and the City of Sunnyvale to ensure a cooperative and compassionate approach to addressing homelessness in Sunnyvale.
Dignity on Wheels
Dignity on Wheels is a mobile shower and laundry service developed by WeHope Shelter in East Palo Alto. In partnership with WeHope and Trinity Church of Sunnyvale, Downtown Streets Team was able to help bring this vital service to Sunnyvale. It is currently the only mobile shower and laundry service operating in the Santa Clara County. Every Tuesday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, we offer showers and laundry services to homeless men and women. Dignity on Wheels is located at Trinity Church of Sunnyvale (477 N. Mathilda Ave)
In early 2015 we launched our Downtown Team in partnership with the Sunnyvale Environmental Services Department (ESD). Since February 2015, we have picked up an average of about 1000 cigarette butts every two weeks in Sunnyvale. ESD has used this data to provide feedback to downtown businesses to encourage them to take measures to reduce their impact.
Cold Weather Shelter
Downtown Streets Team has worked alongside Santa Clara County officials and other nonprofit agencies to help secure a single-site homeless shelter for the 2015-2016 cold-weather season. Now that the location has been secured, our Team Members are volunteering alongside Home First staff to keep the shelter and the surrounding neighborhoods clean.
“We’ll Lift You Up” features our Sunnyvale Team Members and Graduates. Each brings his or her unique personality and story to make this video one of the most uplifting in our collection:
We launched our Sunnyvale Team — our third Silicon Valley Team — in 2012 in partnership with Sunnyvale Community Services and the City of Sunnyvale. The city’s focus for the program is centered squarely on employment, and we have exceeded all of our goals year over year. We are also partnering with the City of Sunnyvale and other non-profit partners in Sunnyvale on a Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) housing program that offers two years of subsidized housing for the working homeless to offer them an opportunity to continue their journey toward self-sufficiency while in housing.
Join the Team
To join our team, prospective volunteers must attend our Weekly Success Team Meetings every Thursday. Once a space opens, they are invited to accept the shift and join the Team.
